Choosing Paper Weight for Fountain Pen Entries

When clients sit at our layout table, they often bring the pen they use for monthly entries—a medium-nib fountain pen, a rollerball, or a pencil for tentative notes. Paper choice follows the pen, not the other way around.

Show-through and gsm

At 80 gsm, iron-gall or saturated fountain ink can ghost on the reverse side, which confuses dual-sided position lists. Moving to 100 gsm usually solves this without thickening the whole book uncomfortably. For annual summary spreads where both sides carry totals, 120 gsm is our default recommendation.

Tooth versus smooth

Smooth sheets suit rapid quarterly updates with gel pens. Slight tooth (felt in a blind sample) helps pencil and light ink stay readable under desk lamps. We keep swatch books at the studio so you can drag a pen across each stock.

Cream versus bright white

Bright white reflects more glare from LED desk lights—common in home offices in high-rise apartments. Cream stocks between CIE 85–92 reduce glare while keeping photocopied statement snippets legible when tipped in.

Sample before you commit

We print two ruled spreads on finalists and ask you to write real column headers—not “test test test.” If your custodian uses eight-digit codes, write them at actual size. That exercise catches cramped columns early.
